COCOP: Open-source software for information exchange and systems integration
The COCOP toolkit for information exchange and systems integration enables scalable, decoupled communication in industrial software systems. It comprises a message-bus-based communication stack as well as supportive tools. These are available as open source (please find the link in “resources”).
COCOP: Copper smelter optimization
Plant-wide optimization tool for copper smelter operating flash smelting furnace, Peirce-Smith converters and anode and slag cleaning furnaces. The main goals are to maximize feed rate (increasing production rate), save resources and reduce emissions per ton produced copper.
Challenges:
Interrelated Batch and continuous process included. Each process (and even equipment) have specific restrictions that need to be considered. Feed mixture composition changing. Several manual...COCOP: Social innovation and co-creation process
Key for COCOP was a methodology integrating technological innovation within a social innovation process of co-creation and co-development by involving users of the future optimisation system and relevant stakeholders right from the beginning; thereby improving effectiveness and impact of the innovation and the implementation process.
The methodology how to implement a social innovation process of co-creation and co-development within COCOP comprises:
Site visits,...COCOP: Architecture and system integration
Industrial process monitoring and control applications consist of heterogeneous systems that need to exchange information in plant-wide setups. An architecture was designed that loosely couples systems in an asynchronous manner to alleviate the issues with point to point connections and to improve utilisation of data from various sources when implementing the plant-wide monitoring and optimised control. A message bus based approach was developed and data flows were defined between COCOP...
COCOP: Overview
The final goal of COCOP was to increase the competitiveness of the European process and automation industry by increasing product quality, improving sustainability, reducing operation costs and improving working conditions.
The approach was to consider operating conditions of all unit processes of an entire plant and the mutual interactions of the unit processes to optimise and improve the overall plant-wide operation, integrating technological and social innovation within a common co...
COCOP: plant-wide monitoring and advisory tool for steel making process
A steel manufacturing plant-wide monitoring and advisory platform to reduce the number of surface and sub-surface defects at the final product, ensuring a good performance of the related sub-processes (secondary metallurgy, continuous casting and hot rolling).
Challenges:
Defects can be generated during Secondary Metallurgy, Continuous Casting and Hot Rolling sub-processes, but they are detected at the end of the manufacturing process. To optimise each sub-process without a...CoPro: Thermal models for process optimisation in the canning industry
Thermal processing often constitutes the main bottleneck of the plant, consuming 70% of the total production time and 60% of the energy of a standard canning factory. Innovative solutions are needed to:
Minimise health risks derived from potential contamination by microorganisms. Reduce product quality losses. Increase efficiency by minimising production times and energy consumption. Comply with environmental constraintsIn attaining these objectives, thermal models are the essential...
